First Lady's Focus

“I hope each of you will join me in supporting our Foundation, thereby meeting the increasing needs of our clubs, our partner hospitals and our shared communities. Please join Governor Gary and me in supporting our District Foundation in our mutual efforts to build a better future for our children.”

-- Donna Jander, 2012-2013 First Lady

Each year, Kiwanians of the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International are given the opportunity to support a project chosen by the Governor’s spouse. Our 2012-2013 First Lady, Donna Jander, has chosen the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation and its array of programs as her focus. By making a donation to the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, you invest in the Kiwanis family and our Partner Hospitals, distributing thousands of dollars each year throughout our District, enabling our Kiwanis family and our Partner Hospitals to meet the needs of children in our shared communities. Your partnership creates opportunities and provides the pathway to a brighter future for those we serve.

Why Support the First Lady’s Focus?

The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation has long supported the clubs in our District to enhance their impact in communities by providing generous club, multi-club and division grants. Our Foundation has championed the next generation of Kiwanis leadership through their support of our Service Leadership Programs, Key Leader Scholarships and the Kenneth C. Forror Scholarship Fund. The Foundation continues to build better futures for our children by providing Pediatric Trauma Prevention grants to our Kiwanis and SLP clubs and through innovative programs like the Partner Hospital Program.

As part of their Partner Hospital program, the Foundation annually invites our six partner hospitals to apply for a grant. These grants enable our partner hospitals to offer advanced pediatric training for doctors, nurses and first responders; purchase specialized pediatric medical equipment; and reach out to their communities with educational materials, safety equipment, and information on childhood trauma prevention.
In recent years, the grant requests received from our partner hospitals have increased in both the number of requests received and in dollar amounts requested; however, the Foundation has been unable to fully fund these requests from our partner hospitals. Together, we can do more. Your support is critical to ensure the Foundation is able to meet the needs of our clubs, partner hospitals and the children of Cal-Nev-Ha. It’s only with your support of the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation that we’re able to meet these increasing needs.

When you make a donation to the Foundation, you not only provide support to the Foundation’s general programs, such as scholarships for Key Leader, Leadership Training for our Service Leadership Programs and club and division grants, you enable the Foundation to increase the grant funding available to our partner hospitals.
Your support enabled the Foundation to award Renown Children’s Hospital a $10,000 grant in 2009 and another in 2011 which they used to provide advanced pediatric training to their emergency room and pediatric floor nurses. Approximately 70 nurses received this training. According to Seema Donahoe, Development Officer at Renown,

“With the support of the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, Renown Children’s Hospital is able to provide specialized training for nurses in our Children’s ER and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which are the only units of their kind between Salt Lake City and Sacramento. Because of our partnership with Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, the emergency and pediatric staffs at Renown Children’s Hospital collaborate to enhance the patient experience and provide continuity in care for our smallest patients and their families.”

Your support also allowed the Foundation to award a $12,500 grant to Rady Children’s Hospital in 2003 for the development of a Mobile Safety Store. Cheri Fidler, Director of the Center for Healthier Communities at Rady Children’s Hospital states, “We are grateful for the support Kiwanis has provided that has enabled us to reach over 10,000 parents in our injury prevention outreach efforts, and will look forward to continuing this partnership.” The safety store is still in operation today and has expanded with new programs. In recognition of the Foundation’s initial investment in the safety store, Kiwanis is listed as a Founding Sponsor on all collateral pieces printed today.

Working together, making a difference:

Together, we can continue to support our clubs as they make positive changes in their communities, develop the next generation of Kiwanis leadership and keep children safe by providing education and resources to children and their families and by supporting our network of children’s hospitals.
It is our hope each club will join us in our efforts to give children in the communities we share the very best chance to live full and meaningful lives. There are many ways both clubs and members can impact a child.
