Scholarship Opportunities from the Kiwanis-Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation
The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation holds dear the belief that within each young person is the potential to make a difference. Our job is to nurture and support that potential, and each year we empower hundreds of youth to become future leaders through training, leadership development, community service and scholarship support. To learn more about these opportunities, please see below.
History

Past Governor Kenneth C. Forror, M.D., established a scholarship fund in 1980 to assist students that are members of Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs (SLP) in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis. It is now an integral part of the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation. Financial assistance is given to a selected number of students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service to their school and community, academic ability and have been active members of a Key Club, KIWIN'S or Circle K club. They must plan to continue their education by attending a college or university, or by attending a trade or vocational school. The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation Scholarship Fund awards approximately $75,000 - $110,000 in scholarships each year.

Service Leadership Programs

Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs include student groups in elementary, middle and high schools as well as colleges. Scholarships are available for members of our high school and college sponsored groups.

How the Fund is Supported

Financial awards made from the Scholarship Fund are derived from the interest earned from the principal of our District Foundation Scholarship Fund and from direct contributions received from our Kiwanis clubs, individual Kiwanians and friends of the Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation. Additional amounts are received each year from projects and events conducted by SLP clubs throughout the District. Commencing in 1997, the Loretta Barksdale-McElwain Scholarship is awarded to a Key Club or KIWIN'S graduating senior. Through the generosity of Lester McElwain, Past Lt. Governor, this single scholarship represents the largest award to one individual in the Foundation's history. The objective of the Foundation's Scholarship Committee is to develop a fund that will produce an annual income great enough to offer an ever increasing number of our students financial assistance as they seek higher education. To achieve this requires the continued support of Kiwanians and Kiwanis clubs throughout the District.

Club Support

As Kiwanis clubs prepare their annual budgets, the inclusion of $100 for membership in the "Friends of the Foundation" can assist the Foundation in increasing the number of scholarships awarded. Each Kiwanis club that becomes a "Friend of the Foundation" will receive a plaque for perpetual recognition. "Friends of the Foundation" anticipate contributing on an annual basis; however, yearly contributions are not required. When an annual donation is made, a dated tab is sent to the donor to be added to the plaque.

Personal Donations

Kiwanians are encouraged to become "Friends of the Foundation" by contributing $100 annually to the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation. A beautiful plaque is presented with subsequent annual tabs as a reminder of the personal investment you are making in our students. Individuals may also make a one-time donation of any amount. Any donation to the Scholarship Fund may be designated to a specific SLP organization scholarship fund.

Scholarship Awards

Scholarship awards are presented annually at each SLP organization's District Convention and are valued from $750 to over $20,000. The number and value of scholarships will be determined by the selection committee and approved by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation Board of Directors.

Application Process

Applications are posted to the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, Circle K, Key Club and KIWIN'S websites in the Fall, with notification given to all Kiwanis clubs. Final submission dates are established by each SLP District Administrator and indicated on the application form. Applicants should be current, active members of a Kiwanis SLP club for a minimum of one year and have a 2.5 GPA or greater. Key Club and KIWIN'S applicants must be graduating seniors and their GPA must be verified by the faculty advisor. Circle K applicants must submit a school transcript. Service performed as a member of a SLP club is the most important consideration.
